Didactics
The Department’s teaching activity covers the design, construction technology, operation, and maintenance of public roads and engineering structures.
Within the field of road engineering, the curriculum includes the geometric design of roads, streets, intersections, and interchanges; pavement structures, including the selection of materials and layer thicknesses; computer-aided analysis of pavement stresses and strains, as well as geometric road design; road safety and traffic organisation, including accident analysis and traffic calming measures; the fundamentals of traffic engineering, including capacity analysis, traffic conditions, and traffic forecasting; pavement strengthening and rehabilitation; and pavement recycling.
In the area of engineering structures, the curriculum covers individual bridge types as separate subjects, together with issues related to architectural design, foundation engineering, and the application of modern structural materials. In broad terms, the teaching programme includes timber, composite, concrete, and steel bridges. Students are also introduced to contemporary engineering tools through practical classes involving the use of specialist computer software in design work.
The Department’s teaching activities include lectures, design classes, laboratory classes, diploma seminars, study visits to notable engineering structures, supervision of professional placements and student scientific interests, the supervision of diploma theses, and the conduct of Master’s degree examinations. Courses are offered within full-time first-cycle and second-cycle degree programmes, as well as supplementary engineering and Master’s degree programmes.
The Department also actively promotes science and engineering knowledge through participation in scientific and cultural events.
The Student Scientific Club of Road and Bridge Engineering also operates within the Department.
